Chapter Five

Tanisha didn’t usually meet clients for dinner, but she was willing to make a last minute change of plans to meet with Claire Thompsons at an upscale restaurant downtown. It meant a last minute cancellation with Howard, but he’d been incredibly understanding and happy to reschedule for the following evening. After all, Claire Thompson was one of the fastest rising hedge fund managers in the city. If Tanisha could secure the contract as her agent in the search for new office space to accommodate Thompson’s rapidly expanding firm, it would mean a whole new avenue of income that would far outstrip the comparably small fees she collected on personal homes.

Wearing her best heels and a sleek black dress, Tanisha strolled into the restaurant five minutes early. She looked around the room, taking in the various wealthy clientele, and it struck her that this was exactly the kind of place Howard would probably have taken her. She supposed she’d have to get used to spending more time in places like this if things continued to go well with Howard, and even more so if her business continued to grow with clients like Claire Thompson.

The hostess informed Tanisha that Mrs. Thompson had already arrived, and then escorted her to the table.

“I’m not late, am I?” asked Tanisha, feeling embarrassed that she’d possibly gotten the time wrong.

“Oh, heavens no,” said Mrs. Thompson. “I got here a bit early. I don’t mean to complain, but when business is this good, you can never get even a second to yourself. Sometimes it’s nice to sit alone for a few minutes before jumping right into the next order of business.”

“I completely agree, Mrs. Thompson” said Tanisha. “Although, I doubt I’ve ever been as busy as you seem to be lately. It’s impressive how quickly you’ve outgrown your current space.”

“Please, call me Claire. I’m probably only a year or two older than you.” Clair sipped her drink and then set it back down on the table. “So you’ve been researching me, have you?”

Tanisha smiled and nodded. “I did my homework so I could do my best to line up some potential locations for you.”

A server came to take drink orders. Claire ordered another gimlet, while Tanisha said she would be fine with water.

“You don’t have to abstain on my account,” said Claire with a grin. “I won’t think less of you for relaxing a little.”

“Oh, it’s not that,” said Tanisha, feeling heat rise to her cheeks. She glanced down towards her stomach. “I’m not able to drink at the moment.”

“Oh, well congratulations then!” said Claire. “You and your husband must be so happy. I’d love to start a family, but it’s so hard with running a company. Well, I’m sure you understand the difficulties involved.”

“I hope you won’t think this will impact my ability to perform as your real estate agent,” said Tanisha.
